Born in Washington, D.C., Al Gore is the son of former Senator Albert Gore Sr. of Tennessee. Gore graduated from Harvard in 1969. He served as a military reporter in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. Upon his return from Vietnam, Gore worked in Tennessee as a reporter and attended law school at Vanderbilt University. In 1976 he was elected to the House of Representatives. He served four terms in the House. In 1984 Gore was elected senator. He campaigned in 1988 for the Democratic presidential nomination, which went to Michael Dukakis. Gore was reelected to the Senate in 1990, where he served two more years before being selected as Bill Clinton’s running mate in the 1992 presidential campaign. Gore’s book about the environment, Earth in the Balance, was also published that year. Gore was elected to a second term as vice president in 1998 and ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2000.
